Nederland, Noord Holland, Zaanstreek. 19-05-2010 De gemeente Zaanstad is in 1974 ontstaan door samenvoeging van de gemeenten Assendelft, Krommenie, Wormerveer, Westzaan, Zaandijk, Koog aan de Zaan en Zaandam. De Zaanstreek is het oudste industriegebied van Europa. De Zaanstreek ligt aan weerszijden van de Zaan, die via het Noordzeekanaal uitmondt in het IJ en bevaarbaar is voor kleine kustvaarders. Zaanstad is a municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Its main town is Zaandam. Zaandam and the surrounding Zaan River region, called the Zaanstreek, have a history that is intimately connected with industry. Zaandam was a leading city in the first Industrial Revolution. In the Golden Age, Zaandam served as a large milling center. Thousands of windmills powered saws that were processing wood for the shipbuilding and paper industries.
